We've
had two major club events since the last newsletter. As
approved by the NCA parent club, North Central hosts Water
and Draft tests in the early fall. NCNC's Water Test was
held September 18th at Lake Andrea in Pleasant Prairie,
WI. The Water Test Chair, committee and stewards did a
wonderful job. We had nice weather, a full entry and a
good turnout for the Saturday night banquet and auction.
See Joan Gunn's article for more information. Congratulations
to all members who earned a Water Title this year, whether
it was WD, WRD, or a WRDX. One NCNC family became our first
to earn a WRDX Title.
And…Congratulations to all members who earned a Draft
Title this year at either NCNC's Draft Test or at another
test. Thank you to all who supported this event as a steward,
participant or spectator. We can't put on a test without
you!
Our Regional Specialty will be held on March 4th, 2006.
NCNC's Regional is one of the largest in the country, if
not the
largest. If you are interested in showing your dog in conformation
or obedience, but are hesitant, attend the show and observe
professional handlers as well as owner and breeder handlers
in the conformation ring. Most owners show their own dogs
in the obedience ring and we all started out as Novices
at one point. Sometimes observing can be just as beneficial
as participating if you are interested in getting started
or wanting to show your dog in obedience, conformation
or
the working events.
Volunteers are always welcome and much needed at any
NCNC event. There are many jobs including post-Regional
cleanup
that you can help us perform even if you haven't been
to a show before. If you would like to help with
the Regional,
please contact Melissa Torres, Show Chair. Melissa and
other club members will appreciate your efforts. Volunteers
and
stewards are in demand. Stewards are always needed for
the Water and Draft Tests as well. Being a Steward is
an educational
experience. Many times, it is just standing still while
the Newf and owner do a figure eight around you or holding
a
leash or equipment while they work. It may even prompt
you to think "this isn't as difficult as I thought it was!
My Newf and I can do this." It can also be just downright
enjoyable watching a dog and handler work together. Besides,
there's no better way to get to know other club members who
share a love of our fabulous breed.
Fall is here and winter and the New Year will soon be
upon us. It will be a time to reflect on your past accomplishments,
whether big or small and a time to plan what your goals
are for you and your best Newfy friend. It could be a
competition
event or maybe it is just a trick you want to teach him,
or maybe your goal is to baby your best friend a little
more … give
him or her a bath more frequently or brush them more often.
It is also a time to think of events you would like the club
to present next year. Please contact any Board Member with
suggestions you may have.
The time change and imminent winter conditions can make
it hard to exercise your Newf. One thing that you can
possibly do is to put your dog on a treadmill. Sound
silly? It might
seem so but this is how many professionals get their
champions into top condition. You don't have to have
a treadmill
designed
for dogs only. Depending on the length of your dog,
a human treadmill will do just fine. Before you begin,
contact
your vet to make sure your Newf can do this exercise.
As with
any exercise program, start slowly and build up the
time
and speed until they are at a comfortable pace. Some
dogs will catch on quickly, others may need some coaxing.
Don't
force them if they don't like it, don't make them do
it. Sometimes, watching their owner on a treadmill
teaches them how to step on and walk. Let them be
curious and
stand
on
it with you when not running. I think it is the next
best alternative to swimming or running on a sandy
beach. It
isn't as hard on them as running on tarmac or as treacherous
as
running on snow or ice covered streets and sidewalks.
Our two Newfs took time to get adjusted but now enjoy
their "workout."
Education Day is November 13th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM
at King's Kennels. Our speakers are Christina Barcus,
DVM
and Rae Powell
D.C. They will be speaking on First Aid and Chiropractic
Care, respectively. Following the speakers there
will be a General Membership meeting and then pictures
with
Santa
to benefit Newf Rescue.
Plans for January include a General Membership meeting
and possibly another Conformation Clinic. The tentative
date
for the General Membership meeting is January 29th
at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Grayslake, IL.
The Conformation
Clinic would be early in January or February to
help you
put the finishing touches on your handling skills
before the Regional Specialty.
Thank you to all who have made this year successful.
Your efforts are appreciated. Our love for Newfoundlands
brings
us together. Our membership makes us strong.
Wishing you all a safe and Happy Holiday season,
Rick

Congratulations to all members who earned their
water titles this year. For those of us who fell short of our
objective, we are already looking forward to water work next
summer.
Fall finds us getting
in the mood for drafting. Coming off the water season, those
dogs which have been swimming on a
regular basis should be in good shape for our Draft Test, October
16th at Rock Cut State Park in Rockford, IL. We always need
volunteers to assist us as stewards at the test and stewarding
requires no special knowledge or skills. Basically it is walking
with the entrants and making sure the dog is safe throughout
the freight haul or taking a corner or side of the basic control
area in case a dog decides to exit the ring prematurely. Not
hard, we just need your help! Let Bob Ohle know if you can
volunteer. Drafting is an event which you can practice just
about anywhere - in your backyard or around your neighborhood.
Draft practice will resume at the Hartke’s in Prospect
Heights, IL this fall. Please contact me if you are interested
in training. I will e-mail reminders to those who practiced
in early spring.
We need your input
on what types of activities you would like to attend and
participate in with your fellow club members.
Events we have held in the past besides the Regional Specialty,
Draft and Water tests have been winter walks, draft seminars,
water workshop for beginners, annual picnic, and education
day. Most recently, these events have been chaired by board
members. Besides your input on what you would like to experience
as a member, we need your enthusiasm and direction. Anyone
with a desire to help and organizational skills can run these
fun events. Won’t you consider being a volunteer or co-chairing
an activity? Experienced members or the current chairperson
will mentor and guide you through the learning process until
you are knowledgeable enough to run the whole thing! If you
have a concept to propose, we will listen and provide necessary
guidance.
Education Day is
scheduled for Sunday, November 13th. Some of the topics being
suggested are first aid for animals, chiropractic
care and acupuncture information sessions. The Education Day
chairs are open to other ideas so please bring them up to Mary
Trauernicht or myself before NCNC’s next general membership
meeting on September 17th. We plan to finalize the education
offering at the meeting and will followup with a mailing on
the details.
Under consideration
for one of our early spring events is grooming for pet owners.
This would be a hands-on learning
event where you would receive help from seasoned Newf owners
on basic grooming. You provide a clean mat free dog. The instructor
will trim an ear, then the owner and so on alternating for
each paw, side, etc. Hands-on experience is the very best way
to learn how to provide this valuable service to your pet.
Regular grooming promotes a nice clean coat which helps control
shedding and matting. Your dog will learn to love it. Many
owners also report a further benefit of having their hands
regularly on their dogs gave them the knowledge to spot skin
changes or lumps under the skin. This led to prompt veterinarian
treatment of serious conditions which were caught in the early
stages. We get so much from our Newfs, let’s take some
time to learn how to make them look and feel their best.
Until the next newsletter,
Rick

Before writing anything
else, I would like to thank outgoing Board members Jean
Quandt and Bob Ohle.
Bob served as Treasurer and Jean as a Director most recently.
Their efforts, hard work and dedication to the club are appreciated.
Those of us who do not have as many years invested in NCNC
are appreciative of those who served on past boards and have
guided the club wisely. I would also like to thank Claire
Hernandez for stepping into the President’s spot late
last year. I am glad that she has decided to remain on the
board. While we will miss Bob and Jean, at the same time
we have some new directors in Treasurer Melissa Torres and
Director Denita Jackman. Thank you all – both new and
outgoing members of our board!
We had a great turnout and a beautiful location for the
annual picnic, awards presentation and election of officers.
There were many new faces as well as familiar faces which
are always nice to see. Chair Mary Trauernicht did an excellent
job with the arrangements and thinking up silly games for
us to play. Tara Martin, who oversees Newf Novelties, brought
some new items to purchase. Of special interest and a quick
sellout were the matching Dog and Bitch bath towels. At our
next event, stop by Newf Novelties, buy something and thank
Tara for the money she has generated for North Central through
the generous donation of her time and effort to keep the
inventory in good shape!
Summer finds many North Central members working on water
training in anticipation of earning a Water Dog (WD) or
Water Rescue Dog (WRD) title. Other members who have obtained
their WRD are training for the Water Rescue Dog Excellent
(WRDX) title. Our water test is September 18th at a location
in Pleasant Plains, WI. Plan to enter or attend, we can
always use volunteers to help us run the test, setup, clean
up or steward. A general membership meeting will be held
in conjunction with the water test.
Looking past the water test, NCNC’s Draft Test will
be October 16th at Rock Cut State Park in Rockford IL. Judges
are Clyde Dunphy, DVM and John Jackman. Draft practice will
resume late September at the Hartke’s in Prospect Heights
IL. The exact date and time will be forthcoming. From our
spring practices, we have several members working on getting
their carts and harnesses in order when they found out just
how easy and fun it is to work with Newfs in carting.
Newfoundlands, while magnificent animals, do need a lot
of care. While hugging your buddy, take a comb and run through
his coat. Keep his feet and ears trimmed to help him stay
healthy. A healthy Newf is a happy Newf. Having an obedient
Newf makes for a happy owner! In the fall, many park districts
and school programs offer basic obedience classes. Sign up
and have some fun with your four legged friends. Who knows,
you may decide you both really like it!
This is a new and challenging position
for me as NCNC’s
President and I am excited and nervous at the same time.
I don’t know all of you yet although I’m looking
forward to meeting you at our club functions and other Newfoundland
events. So, let me introduce myself to those who have not
met me or my wife, Cathy. We brought home our first Newfoundland
on March 18th, 1990. Amity’s King Cyrus wasn’t
a show dog or a working dog. He was our special companion
and my best friend. He would swim almost every day from April
until the middle of September for the four years when we
lived in New Jersey on a lake. Cyrus was with us for all
of his 10½ years on earth. We helped him cross the
rainbow bridge 5 years ago. We thought we were going to wait
awhile before looking for another Newf when he left us. But
as many of us know who have loved this breed, it’s
very hard to live without one. So, four days later the search
began and on August 16, 2000, we were fortunate enough to
bring Cambriol home from New Jersey. Our intentions were
to have another friend and maybe dabble in water or draft
work. At the suggestion of Cambri’s breeder to join
a local club, we attended our first NCNC event, the 2000
fall draft test, in hopes of becoming members. We met many
knowledgeable club members that day and they have helped
us along the way in the conformation and obedience show rings,
at draft work and in water rescue training. Not satisfied
with one Newfoundland at this point, Cheers came to live
with us on October 31st the following year. They are both
great companions with so much love to give and an amazing
willingness to try anything and everything. They have been
our teachers more than the other way around. (On occasion,
they also contribute articles to Newf News about their outings
to local restaurants in the summer!) They are the reason
we do the things we thought we would never do such as buying
an RV and camping with our Newfy friends! We are looking
forward to adding to our four legged family later this year
or early next year with one or possibly two more newfound
friends.
I am a member of the Newfoundland Club
of America and have been a North Central Club Board Member
the past two years.
It is an honor to be elected your club President. I hope,
with your help and understanding, that we continue a tradition
of excellence in education and service for our breed. Please
remember that this is your club – we need to hear from
you, our members, about what is working (or not) and what
events you would like to see us schedule. Please feel free
to contact me or any board member with comments or suggestions.
I can be reached at 847-259-0245 or via e-mail rhartke@wowway.com.
Finally, I’d like to send a message of condolence
to special friends who’s four legged mate set sail.
We never have enough time with our Newfs, give them lots
of hugs and cookies today.
Until the next newsletter,
Rick

Day weekend in Kalamazoo Mi was certainly a weekend to remember!
My 10 month old puppy
that I bred, took BOS
in sweeps on Saturday under judge Chris Rakyta. On Sunday,
the day of Great Lakes regional, he was again BOS in sweeps
under Kathy Hamilton. To top it all off, Robby went WD and
BOW at the regional under Jean Fournier!! The best part of
it all was that I handled him myself. No kidding! I want
to thank everyone who attended for their support. The cheering
and clapping for Robby meant so much to me. It was wonderful
to have the support of my friends and peers. As one of my
good friends said a few years back,” the dogs come
and go but the people remain”. It’s so true!
Robby is out of my breeding by Ch. Kettle Hill’s First
Lady (Mamie) and Ch. I’m Great to be Back (Bruce).
Thanks to Loredana and Giorgio Salinas who allowed me to
breed to Bruce and most of all to Kelli Lepore who recommended
Bruce to me when he came to live with her. Also, a huge thank
you to Kelli for her help grooming. Robby looked great!

for Sunday June 26. The event is moving to a southeast Wisconsin
park! Come to socialize with your fellow club members and their
dogs, play games, enter your child in a drawing contest….and
plenty more fun things to do, like enjoying our traditional potluck!
We have set a date for a water seminar
to be held at the Gunn/Reese residence on Sunday July 17, 05.
Chair for the event is Jan Danielsen.
In the meantime, Drafting at the Hartke Residence is still happening
on Sundays until Sunday May 22, at 1 pm. Experienced “drafters” have
been helping some of our members and their dogs with harnesses
and carts. Check with Rick Hartke for more info. When the weather
will start cooperating, water work will begin again at the Gunn/Reese

Hello Everyone,
Well, 2005 began with a well attended conformation clinic. Mr.
Rob Engelking gave everyone tips and instructions on how to get
started with showing your dog in conformation.
Members had the opportunity to try out these new learned skills
at our very popular annual Regional Specialty. This year a one
day event which saw people drive in from as far as Canada or
Minnesota!
We’ve returned
this year to the Milwaukee Sports Complex in Franklin, WI, site
which the board is now considering for future
regional shows.
The Regional Specialty was another
well organized event and I would like to extend special thanks
to the team of energetic
volunteers and Melissa Torres

on Sunday January 23. We will meet after
judging at John Hawk’s Pub in Milwaukee (see your November newsletter
