President's Column - Rick Hartke

We've had two major club events since the last newsletter. As approved by the NCA parent club, North Central hosts Water and Draft tests in the early fall. NCNC's Water Test was held September 17th at Lake Andrea in Pleasant Prairie, WI. The Water Test Chair, committee and stewards did a wonderful job. We had decent weather, a full entry and a good turnout for the Saturday night banquet and auction. Congratulations to all members who earned a Water Title this year, whether it was WD, WRD, or a WRDX and there's always next year for those that worked hard in the water but the title was elusive.

And…congratulations to all members who earned a Draft Title this year. Thank you to all who supported NCNC's Draft Test as a steward, participant or spectator. We can't put on a test without you. Our draft entry was low this year, four, compared to ten entries last year. Unfortunately, no one passed. With the low number of entries, perhaps as a club we should consider having a minimum number of entries in order to hold the draft test. We do seem to cycle up and down in entries from year to year. Every club event takes time, resources and a lot of individual effort whether it is a water test, education day, the annual picnic or the Regional.

In looking back at your accomplishments (or lack of) with your Newfoundland in water or draft, the common denominator for success seems always to come down to the Newf understanding and obeying your commands. Those who did well probably have worked hard on obedience training and perhaps even scored high in the obedience ring. Does this mean obedience is the key to success in the working events? It certainly seems to be a key factor in working as a successful team with your Newf in any undertaking.

Many of us purchased our Newfs because we wanted a pet. Maybe you saw a Newfoundland and liked the sweet expressive eyes, the size or the disposition. You did some research and you decided that a Newfoundland would fit well into your family and lifestyle. Then perhaps you started working your dog like he or she was bred to do or are curious about what it takes to do so. Maybe you got into draft, water work, agility, rally obedience or maybe even conformation. Regardless of where you are today, there are still more ways of spending quality time with your best friend.

I was fortunate enough when school resumed to become involved with a reading program at the library in Des Plaines, IL. For five weeks, I would take Cambri and Cheers to the library for about two hours. The children would read short stories to the dogs to build their reading skills and instill confidence in their ability to read. The children were between the ages of seven and eleven years old. The dogs must be certified by a therapy group or at the least be a Canine Good Citizen. If this is something you would be interested in doing contact your local library to see if they have such a reading program. Besides Des Plaines, in the Chicago suburban area there are similar programs at Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect and Dundee Township. If your local libraries haven't done this yet, help them set up a reading program. You both will enjoy it and it is heartwarming to see how well the children interact with the dogs and the confidence boost it brings just having an unconditional listener.

Our next event is Education Day December 3rd in Fredonia, WI. There will be a Rally obedience seminar in the morning followed by a general membership meeting. In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to have your favorite friend have their picture taken with Santa and there will also be a Newfy gift exchange. For more information, please see the announcement in this newsletter.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to make NCNC's club events successful this year. Your efforts are appreciated. Our love for Newfoundlands brings us together. Our membership makes us strong. If you weren't involved this year or kept saying to yourself that you would like to learn more about this noble breed of ours, how about a New Year resolution to participate in an activity in 2007? You already know that we share the love of Newfoundlands in common and you might make some new friends. We sure have in the last six years since we've been NCNC members! Hope to see you soon.

Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season and a wonderful Newf Year!

President's Column - Rick Hartke

As summer winds down, I hope all members trying to earn a water title had success in your efforts. Congratulations to those who did pass, and good luck to members who still have a test or two to go and for others - better luck next year. Even if a title wasn't in the cards for your Newf this year, if you have tried to teach your four legged pal water exercises, you have most likely learned some new tricks yourself. The effort to work together is always time well spent. Even though the NCNC water test is full and entries closed, come out and root for your friends and possibly help steward at the water test. It will be held September 17th in Pleasant Prairie, WI. There is practice for entrants on the 16th,
followed by dinner and general membership meeting that night at the Pleasant Prairie site. If you have any questions on what is involved or want to volunteer, please call Joan Gunn, Mary Trauernicht or Roger Danielson.

After the water season, two more events are scheduled for this year, the Draft Test October 15th at Rock Cut State Park in Loves Park, IL and Education Day December 3rd in Fredonia, WI. Draft Test judges are NCNC club member Teresa Gedritis and Tom Brant from central Illinois. Education Day is in the final planning stages of the day's activities. As always if you would like to participate or could volunteer to help with any event, your participation is greatly appreciated. Extra hands can always be used before during and after our club events - the more volunteers the better! Please contact the event's chairperson or any board member if you would like to help or just learn more.

For members who are interested in preparing for our Draft test in October or who are interested in drafting, please contact me. Draft practice will begin at the Hartke's in Prospect Heights IL on September 24th. Dogs will be taken through a maneuvering course similar to the course at the test. Practice will also include hitching and harnessing, basic obedience, and a long freight haul. If you would like to learn more about draft work and whether your Newf might like to try this out, give me a call. We have two carts to use in practice and a couple of harnesses that you could borrow if needed.

In the planning stages for 2007 is a show grooming seminar with Penny Shubert. Dates under consideration for the grooming seminar are January 13 or 20th. Other regional clubs have had Penny do this and attendees have been very pleased with the practical knowledge they have gained. The seminar will include hands-on participation for ten dogs/groomers. The amount of spectators will be limited to space available once the site is chosen. For those members who don't know Penny, she was an early member of NCNC. She has groomed Newfoundlands and other breeds for over 30 years including the majority of Best of Breed winners at the Newfoundland Club of America's National Specialties since the mid to late 80's. Certainly, most of us remember the 2004 Westminster Best In Show winner and top Newf in the show ring, Darbydale's All Rise Pouch Cove (Josh) who was groomed by Penny.

The 2007 Regional Specialty will be a two day showcase for Newfs. The Friday and Saturday event will again be held in Franklin, WI. Moving to a two day show will require greater participation from club members in the way of stewards, pre-show planning, post-show cleanup and ring participation. Please, let Melissa Torres know if you can help in any way. There will be two days of conformation, obedience, and rally obedience (Rally-O). So if you aren't into conformation, you still have time to work on your Newf's obedience (and your handling skills) to try to earn a leg or two in Obedience or Rally-O. Look into Rally-O classes. At the Novice level, exercises are performed on lead which is a great way to get into this activity. Remember, basic obedience is an absolute necessity for dogs as large as our breed (and small dogs, too)! Obedience plays a big part in every day life with your Newfoundland. Just taking a walk on leash under control or a short sit/stay when company arrives can make everyone's life more enjoyable. If you do plan to train towards a working title, it is also beneficial to have your AKC obedience title before you begin water or draft work. Having a Companion Dog (CD) title is an automatic pass for the basic control exercise requirement for junior Water Dogs. Without a CD, it is a difficult exercise at the test because the exercise is always performed in an outside ring (more to sniff!) and near the water area which is another big distraction. Many owners can tell you how their Newf failed basic control at a water test which means they failed the entire test before they even reached the water. A very disappointing result when you’ve trained hard. By the way, basic control still needs to be performed at draft tests even if you have an obedience title because chances of serious injury to your Newf or others are greater. In any event, signing up for obedience classes offered in your community is always a great way to form the bond and respect our companions need as well as providing socialization activities. If you've been working on this, plan on entering our Regional for show experience!

Here are a few other updates and news. The By-Laws Committee has reviewed the NCNC by-laws. We are preparing the suggested changes and hope to present the recommendations at Education Day 2006 or at the general membership meeting in January 2007. Also, please mark November 3-5, 2006 on your calendar. The NCA Board will be meeting at the Comfort Suites O'Hare in Schiller Park on those days. If you are an NCA member, you are welcome to attend and observe the meeting.

This is your club and we are always looking for ways to improve it. It is for you, your family and your Newfoundland(s) that we try to decide upon activities that will bring us together to see old friends and start new friendships. Please feel free to contact any board member with suggestions, comments, or new activities. Our board meetings are open to any member. If you wish to attend, please contact any board member for more information.

Until next time, enjoy the fall and all of our club activities. Hope to see you soon!

Banana Pup Cakes

2 cups water
2 bananas
1 tsp. vanilla
3 cups flour (whole wheat)
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 egg
3 tbsp. honey

Heat oven to 350 degrees F.

These are great for birthdays! Some carob chips can be melted and used for "frosting."

Feel free to add other ingredients such as sunflower seeds (without the shell), nuts, carob chips, shredded carrot, or diced apple. Crunchy peanut butter can be used instead of smooth. Whole wheat flour is always better than white. Extra treats or double batches can be frozen for future use.

Before writing anything else, I would like to thank Rhonda Brunning and Karen Clancy on behalf of the club for their outstanding efforts in raising funds for Newf Rescue with the second annual Newfiepalooza. They more than doubled the amount of money raised in 2005, topping over $3,000! Rhonda and Karen spent countless hours contacting vendors and club members to obtain items to be auctioned or raffled as well as giveaways and soliciting volunteers to run the many activities for the event. The contributions from everyone and the assistance of those who volunteered and attended are greatly appreciated. Newf Rescue provides an extremely valuable service for our breed and is an ongoing process. The funds generated are sorely needed and used wisely to help Newfoundlands in need.

I would also like to thank outgoing Secretary, Pam Kroll. Pam has served on the board for six years and was Secretary for nearly all of those years. Pam, we thank you for your service to the club. Linda Larsen is our new Secretary and her dedication to the club is appreciated. While we will miss Pam, we have a new director - Cissy Sullivan. Cissy has been involved with many events over the past few years and we welcome her to the Board.

We had a good turnout and a beautiful location for the annual picnic, awards presentation and election of officers. Everything went smoothly due to the planning of the picnic committee. Thank you, Co-Chairs Mary Trauernicht and Maggie Hatrokba for overseeing this event.

We had an excellent turnout for the Water Seminar held June 10th & 11th in Harvard! There were 30 participants. Thanks go to Joan Gunn and Mike Reese for putting this valuable training together and for hosting it for NCNC. For those of you attending, what a good way to start your Newfoundland water training or tune up your skills! We hope to see you at our water test in September. Cathy & I enjoy water work with all three of our Newfs. It's especially fun to watch our puppy learn from our more experienced dogs. It's back to the basics of take-hold-give along with obedience for the pup.

With summer in full swing, many North Central members are working on water training in anticipation of earning a Water Dog (WD) or Water Rescue Dog (WRD) title. Other members who have obtained their WRD are training for the Water Rescue Dog Excellent (WRDX) title. Our water test is September 17th in Pleasant Prairie, WI. Please support our club by entering our test or if you're not quite ready, we can always use volunteers to help us run the test, setup, clean up or steward. It's great to watch our Newfs perform the exercises for each division. A general membership meeting will be held at the Water Test Banquet the night before the test.

Looking past the water test, NCNC's Draft Test will be October 15th at Rock Cut State Park in Rockford IL. Our judges are Teresa Gedritis (NCNC member) and Tom Brant. Draft practice will be held in the fall at the Hartke's in Prospect Heights IL. Dates and time will be forthcoming. If you can't make it, practice with club members in your area or on your own. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call a fellow club member who could help you.

Just a reminder that with the hot summer days, our Newfoundlands need us to pay special attention to grooming. Many blow (shed) their coats during this time and getting the dead hair out before mats can form is a valuable service to our companions (also makes it easier on our vacuum cleaners). While hugging your friend, take a comb or rake brush and run it through their coat. Keep feet and ears trimmed as well. Watch for any areas that they may be licking too much on their coats. A hotspot can turn ugly overnight and require veterinary attention. Keeping your Newf healthy makes a happy Newf.

Despite the summer heat, your dog still needs exercise and work. Try to find an evening or indoor obedience class, take them for walks in the early morning or evening when it's cooler. They'll feel better for it and so will you! As always, have fun with your four legged friends.

Best wishes for an enjoyable summer. Remember NCNC is your club, any suggestions or volunteers for events are always appreciated.

Until next time, Rick

Congratulations to all North Central Newfoundland Club members who made the trek to the National as a participant or a spectator. Many of our club members did well. Just making the cut at the National is a heady experience and there are those that won their classes and even won High in Trial for Obedience two consecutive days. (Read who they are in the Show & Tell section.) If this was your first national, I hope you enjoyed it! If you handled your own dog, congratulations no matter the placements. It takes a lot of intestinal fortitude for an owner-handler to perform in this venue. That is why so many of us decide that while we may train our dogs in conformation, at the big shows a professional handler can be an excellent choice as well.

Two events are planned for June. The water workshop June 10th and 11th in Harvard and the Annual Picnic which is June 25th. The water workshop is great way for first timers to learn the basics and grasp an understanding of what is involved to have your best friend become a Water Dog, Water Rescue Dog, or a Water Dog Rescue Excellent. Experienced water workers should be able to pick up some training tips also. Hopefully it will show you the natural instincts of your Newf and give you further motivation to get into the water and begin working your Newf. You don't have to wait until the workshop though. Start reading the regulations on www.newfdogclub.org, do a search on Google for "water rescue + Newfoundland" and you'll be amazed how many stories are out there. Most of the exercises involve taking a rope/bumper or retrieving an article, so start with simple "take, hold, give" commands of any object. A game of fetch with the commands "find it" and "bring it" to you will get you started on the basics on land without needing water!

The picnic will be held at Chain O' Lakes State Park in Spring Grove, IL. Last year, the picnic was held in Wisconsin. We plan to alternate picnic sites between Illinois and Wisconsin. If you can, please volunteer to help Maggie. There are always lots of tasks for a successful event and helping hands are always appreciated. This is a fun event for all club members as we get to bring our Newfs, chat with friends, enjoy some fun activities and celebrate accomplishments from last year. Directions to the picnic site as well as awards information can be found in this newsletter. There will also be a general membership meeting and annual election of board members and officers. If you have any agenda items for the membership meeting you would like to discuss, please let me or another board member know.

Cindy Dasbach, Erin Schanen and Jill Verhunce will be the co-chairpersons for Education Day on December 3rd. Thank you for volunteering! It is wonderful to have fresh talent working on activities in the club. Events for the day are still being finalized although the current site being looked at is north of Milwaukee, WI. Please mark this future event on your calendar and support these club members who have volunteered.

One other suggested event is a New Members only day. Since we have such a broad range of knowledge in our membership, new members may feel shy in asking questions or coming to events they may not know enough about. This would be an opportunity for first time Newf owners and new members to understand what our beautiful dogs can do. So newcomers, their dogs and a handful of experienced club members would get together and cover the basics of grooming, obedience, drafting, water work, showing your dog in conformation and lots of Q and A. Hopefully this would encourage everyone to attend more club events and feel comfortable no matter the subject at hand. If you are a new member, we would like to hear if this is something you would be interested in so let your board members or me know what you think of this idea, please.

Spring is a beautiful time to start an exercise program with your Newf, if you haven't already. Early morning or late evening is good time to walk your boy or girl or your pack. If you and your Newfie aren't into shape, start with a short walk and gradually go farther. Build up their stamina as well as yours. An adult Newfoundland should be able to walk a mile to two miles or more daily fairly easily. At least a mile in the morning and at night. While most of our Newfs would prefer to sleep eight hours or more a day, they do need exercise and stimulation. Newfoundlands are Working Dogs and they excel at it. Giving them a chore and keeping them exercised will reap their own rewards in a more contented and calm dog. They do need to perform work for us, even if that's found in the companionship of a walk together.

There are a couple of reminders, too. This is the last call for anyone wishing to be involved in the updating of the Bylaws. If you are interested please contact me by May 31st. (If you've already stated your interest to me, I have your name.) Also, the deadline for membership renewal was March 15th. If you have a question about your membership, please contact Mary Trauernicht.

As always volunteers and suggestions are welcome. Please feel free to contact any board member. It takes many people to host some of our events. Those club members who volunteer their time work hard to have an enjoyable event. Their efforts are appreciated.

Enjoy the spring and summer and hope to see you at our activities in June. Enjoy quality time spent with your best friend.

Until next time, Rick

He has been a real trooper throughout his cancer treatments, keeping his spirits up and enjoying his life and four legs to the greatest extent possible.

Aloe Vera Newfie Shampoo
About as pure a shampoo as you can get, this recipe is detergent-free; in addition, the healing properties of aloe vera gel help to sooth skin irritations.

Ingredients

2 cups water
2 teaspoons liquid castile soap
2 tablespoons aloe vera gel

Combine all ingredients in a jar. Shake to blend. Get the pet's coat wet, pour on the shampoo a few table spoons at a time, lathering as you go. Work the shampoo in with your hands. Rinse thoroughly. Blow dry.

President's Column - Rick Hartke

Congratulations to all the winners and participants at North Central Newfoundland Club's Regional Specialty held in Franklin, WI. The first rule I was taught when I started showing is to have fun! Of course, being a competitive person, I did have to be reminded of that frequently by my wife and friends. Showing your Newfoundland should be enjoyable whether the result at the end of the day is what you expected or not. Being with our companions during training, teaching them what to do in the ring (conformation or obedience) and having them appear at their best is why we do this. It does take hours of practice and grooming and handling lessons to reach the show ring. That is a winning combination in my mind because we get to know our Newfs better and understand what gets them excited about working for us.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the volunteers who worked on the Regional Specialty! Many club members don't realize the effort and hours needed to put on a specialty show. It starts with Show Chair, Melissa Torres, assembling the show team and extends down to club members who sweep the floor when the show is completed. While it is great to have a large number of exhibitors, without the volunteers we would not be able to have such a flourishing show every year. Please be sure to thank everyone who volunteered to make this show a success when you see them. If you have comments on the Regional overall, please take the time to write Melissa or your board members. We would like to hear your opinions.

The Regional was a nice tune-up for the National which is the last weekend in March in Cumberland, MD. The national is a fun week filled with conversation, impromptu gatherings and of course showing our Newfoundlands. The activities include Obedience, Sweepstakes, Conformation, Draft Tests, Top 20, annual NCA meeting, the auction and brown bag, Health Challenge raffles, vendors with Newfy articles and so much more going on for an entire week. There is truly something for everyone. This year's National is in Maryland, a little closer to home than last year's, so I hope to see many of our NCNC members there. Many of the Board members and I will be in attendance at the National - if this is your first National or you're an old hand, be sure to say hi and let us know if there is any way we can help you.

NCNC's next big event is Newfiepalooza, May 13th. This event is a fundraising benefiting Newfoundland Rescue. Rhonda Brunning and Karen Clancy do a fabulous job organizing this affair. To view some of the wonderful items for silent auction or raffle please check our website. There will also be a grooming seminar, an animal communicator, a professional photographer and CGC and TDI testing. Some of these events need pre-registration so be sure to check it out on our web site. Last year this event generated $1,500 for North Central Newfoundland Rescue. With your help this year, we hope the donation will be even larger. Please plan to attend this happening. The sad truth is that our Newfs grow from adorable puppies to oversized dogs seemingly overnight and not everyone who has a Newf is able to take care of them especially as they age or have special needs. Sometimes it is a matter of not understanding the breed or having the time to train them, tragically other times personal events happen that break up a Newfy home. Rescue is an important club function and any way that you can contribute is appreciated.

The Annual Picnic is June 25th and Maggie Hatrobka has volunteered to be the Annual Picnic Chairperson. This is one of our annual events with a membership meeting where we vote on our club directors and positions. As well, we honor our titlists from the past year. It is a fun day for the entire family. Please give Maggie your support and volunteer wherever needed.

Water season will be upon us before we know it. Now is a good time to start your practice on land. Work on take a line or underwater retrieve. Or sign up for the two day water seminar in June. The first day will cover philosophy of water training, basic control, and junior water dog exercises. Day two includes land exercises for water work, senior water dog exercises and one-on-one work as well as problem solving. The water workshop instructors are Barbara and Roger Frey, members of NCA and water test judges.

The club is still in need of a chairperson(s) to host our annual Education Day scheduled for December 3rd. While this event is primarily an educational venue, it can also include fun activities. Anyone with a desire to help and organizational skills can help run our NCNC events. Won't you consider being a volunteer or co-chairing an activity? Experienced members or the current chairperson will mentor and guide you through the learning process until you are knowledgeable enough to run the whole thing! If you have a concept to propose, we will listen and provide necessary guidance. A location in the west/southwest suburbs would be nice as we haven't had any events in that direction for our club members who live south of Chicago.

Until next time, Rick

President's Column - Rick Hartke

Happy 2006! The holidays flew by and I hope everyone enjoyed them as much as we did, getting a chance to see family, tell tales and sit around the fire with our 4 legged friends. For NCNC activities, the New Year begins with a Conformation Clinic on January 15th at King’s Kennels. The clinic will be geared to beginners as well as seasoned handlers to help you tune up for NCNC’s Regional Specialty on March 4th. Bring your puppy or your adult Newf to work on your stacking and movement and get ready to enter our show. Melissa Torres and Joan Gunn, along with their committee members, are hard at work to make this show a memorable one for all exhibitors and attendees. It takes tremendous planning and organization to have a successful Regional. Thanks in advance to our Regional team.

If a show career is in your future, you should be working on your dog’s coat, practicing stacking, stepping up and movement. Don’t forget physical conditioning either, a show dog should be in top shape. Walking and jogging are a surefire way to improve endurance and in return, you get time with your special friend. The Regional isn’t only for conformation dogs, obedience is also offered. So work on your heeling patterns, down stays, stand for exams and figure eights. Enter and try to get a leg toward a Companion Dog (CD) title. A friend suggested we do that a few years ago and much to our surprise, we qualified with Cheers! If you’re not sure how to get started to enter, ask an NCNC Board Member for information. We would be glad to answer any questions. Your board and other club members are resources for all of us to draw upon when needed.

A general membership meeting will be held January 29th at the Lake County Fairgrounds. The meeting will begin shortly after the Newfoundlands are finished in the show ring at the Grayslake show. The announcement will be forthcoming in the mail. Our goal at this meeting is to try to fill the balance of volunteers needed to have a successful Regional. Also, please take time to review the trophies which are still available for sponsorship. Sponsoring a trophy means that you fund the small memento given to winners and other placements at the Regional. It’s a small thing to do and the person winning it will treasure their memory of a special day and the people who made it that way. The trophies that are still open for sponsorship can be found in this newsletter and also at www.northcentralnewf.org

Need a New Year’s resolution? How about committing to brush your Newf with a slicker brush every day for five minutes? Did you know that Newfs get their signal to start shedding their winter coats as soon as the days start to get longer? Seems funny since so much of the winter is left but it takes awhile to grow and lose all that hair! You don’t need to groom your Newf every day from head to toe, however, you do need to get into their undercoat with a good brushing to get out that loosened, shedding hair. Run your hands over your friend and make sure there are no mats in their coat. Give them a complete brushing once a week or more often if needed. This will not only make them feel better but will make their coats glossy and full. Remember to keep their nails and pads trimmed tight. With the type of weather we have had lately, we having been using stand and stay (obedience commands) with regularity to wipe our dogs’ feet off as they come in from outside. Grooming and basic obedience are an integral part of having a happy pet environment for you and your Newfs.

We have other events scheduled after the Regional Specialty, starting with Newfiepalooza tentatively scheduled for May 13th. This is a fundraiser for Newf Rescue. Rhonda Brunning, Karen Clancy and crew did a tremendous job in the inaugural event last year. Plan to attend and make this year’s event more successful than last year. All proceeds go to our Rescue Fund which helps Newfs whose families can no longer take care of them or are abandoned.
In June two events are planned, a two day water workshop and our annual picnic. Stay tuned for what will be taught over the weekend workshop. More information will be available in the future as the fine details are worked out.

June 25th is the date of the Annual Picnic and awards presentation. If you have earned a title in 2005, be sure to send it in when requested so we can honor you and your Newf’s achievements. It is a casual day of conversation, games, lunch and general membership meeting. NCNC is looking for a new chair person for this event. If you would like to be more involved with your club, this is a fun event that doesn’t require special knowledge and is a good way to get to know your fellow members. If you have good organizational skills and are interested, please contact myself or any board member.

Draft practice will be held again in Prospect Heights beginning in March. There is also a possibility of draft practices being held in the Waukesha, WI area. The first set of practice dates will be the 5th, 12th and 19th. Practice time will be from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Practice may resume after the National (see dates to remember) depending on attendees’ interest. Other practice sessions will be after the water test as a final tune up before the Draft Test in October.

As required by our current by-laws, they must be reviewed every three years. In the near future, I will be chairing this undertaking and putting together a committee for the review process. We will then report back to the membership on recommendations. Any voting member wishing to serve on this committee, please contact me. As always we are looking for your input and help. If you’re interested in contributing on any level - chair of an event, volunteer for setup, tear down or hospitality or if you have suggestions for a new event - please contact any board member. This club is for you and your Newfoundland. We may not all see eye to eye, but one thing we all have in common is a tremendous love for our breed. Let’s enjoy them together!

Hope to see you at the Conformation Day – come on out even if you don’t plan to show your Newf. There’s plenty of room for spectators and chairs to sit on while you watch the activities. You’ll get a chance to see what conformation is and be ready to couch surf with your Newf through all the dog shows on Animal Planet, the AKC Eukanuba National show and the USA Network for the Westminster Kennel Club.

Until next time, Rick

Chunky Monkey--(aka Devil Dog by some of our friends when she was small). She was into everything--untying shoe laces, tugging pants legs, nibbling toes, all at a whirlwind pace. She was also retrieving, pulling a little kid wagon around the back yard, and retrieving toys from the kiddy pool. She was willing, stubborn, pushy, persistent, charming and delightful. FUN. A perfect candidate for WRDX work. Last summer she finished her WRD making her eligible for the VN. So this summer began the WRDX training. It really sounds extremely difficult until you begin to think about what your dog already knows. It seemed to us that she would need to be in excellent physical shape, so we began by gradually swimming her longer distances every week. She WILL retrieve that bumper relentlessly. We began new exercises by having her find or get either John or myself to teach the exercise then switch to our friends and then to less familiar people. We taught “ go under” for the capsized boat exercise. Sometimes we revised our thinking on the way an exercise should be done to how Chunky wanted to do it. She was always willing, if she could figure out what it was we wanted her to do. We tried to finish a session with a fun thing for her. And we had at least two sessions per day. The session might only be swimming for that bumper for conditioning, but she loves that bumper! We’ve been fortunate to have people to work with and good places to swim with our dogs from our first Newf on. People to train with are a real necessity for WRDX work THANK YOU to everyone who helped with our training.
