Hi Newf Friends

Just had to say that I am very happy to see so many of our members participating on so many levels in the events that have been planned for this time of year. ”PARTY TIME”, that was just what it was!! A wonderful water test at Lake Andrea in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin the weekend of September15th and 16th. The organization started on Saturday with the early arrival of Andrea and Dave Z, Mary T, Dona B and Roger D who all worked diligently to prepare the site by setting up all the tents and equipment. It wasn’t long before the first entrants started to arrive along with many of our board members. Our board meeting was held from 1:30-3:00 p.m. followed by the obedience exercises. From the applause of the crowd anyone within hearing distance knew that we had many successes. The evening banquet provided a great chance for sharing time with new and old friends. The meal was great, the general membership meeting went well (even though I was overwhelmed with the NCA President attending the meeting I was so nervous), and the icing on the cake was our auction and brown bag raffle. MANY MANY thanks to all who donated items, participated in the LIVELY bidding (Thanks Ted and Judy!!) It made our evening an overall wonderful time. Dawn came really quickly and so did the arrival of all the entrants. The air was very crisp, and I hoped that everyone had brought some full wetsuits! The event ran smoothly with great organization from Roger D. our chair. The volunteers were outstanding! Darlene R. and her family members were precise in their record keeping. We cannot thank you enough for your help. Without all the volunteers these events could not come about. No matter in what capacity you volunteer, it makes a difference. Where else can you go to a water test and have a “fully stocked kitchen” to have your dogs’ portrait taken? Great idea to kick off the sale of our COOK BOOK! Thank you Tara M, Wendy W, and her sister Denise for your artistic and photographic talents, and to the whole cookbook crew, you did an outstanding job as usual. Congratulations to all the entrants on your dedication and hard work with your dogs. It was a sheer pleasure to watch the interaction. Many thanks to our judges.

The results were as follows: 2007 Water Test, Prairie Springs Park/Lake Andrea, September 16, 2007 Judges: Roger Frey & Joan Gunn Those who qualified were: New Water Dogs Aqua's Hugo Out N About (Dazzler) Handler - Karen Schlipf Haytee's On Fire at Snowdrift CD (Siren) Handler - Cherilyn Antin Huey's Special Angel (Gabe) Handler - Lisa Noel Nash of B and B Zirpoli Gore CD (Nash) Handler - Patti Zirpoli New Water Rescue Dogs Bright Star's Macy Mae of Blackwatch (Macy) Handler - Dona’ Baker Windancer's Duchess Isabella WD (Belle) Handler - Guy Germaine.

After this event, things began to ROCK AND ROLL in preparation for “Rolling at Rock Cut” Draft Test to be held on Sunday, October 14th. One week prior to this, a seminar about drafting was conducted through the hard work and efforts of Linda Larsen. Linda was assisted by Melissa Torres. Everyone who attended had a chance to participate in drafting at their own level of experience. Nice comments were made about this opportunity. On Saturday October 13th volunteers organized the site, and prepared the course. We tried hard to order good weather for Sunday, but it was not in the cards! It looked like a long WET day. We were joined by our Judges Ingrid Lyden and Barbara Jenness. Much to everyone’s surprise MANY club members, along with family and friends of entrants turned out to watch in spite of the weather conditions. With high hopes that the rain would stop, the exercises began. Much to our dismay the rain became heavier and stayed that way throughout the obedience and maneuvering portions of the test. The freight haul presented the biggest challenge with the terrain becoming very muddy, with many slick areas that were puddle filled. As I followed the entrants I was amazed at how well each team handled the adverse conditions. What a great accomplishment when we finally reached the clearing and the freight haul was finished! Once again the volunteers were amazing. So many people need to work together to make these events successful ones. There was a lovely round of applause for our Chair Rick H. I would also like to thank Linda L Co-Chair, and Tara M Test Secretary, for all the behind the scenes organization and planning, Amy C. for putting together a great lunch for all, to the entire family of Darlene R who devoted their time in keeping all the precise paperwork, Gerry H for a great job as chief ring steward, Tim C for his help as security officer, Bill and Carol T for providing the distraction on the freight haul, the stewards John and Denita J, Judy H, Linda L, David, Rick H, and Sid R. To everyone who “weathered” this day your support was the warmest feature of the day! Congratulations to everyone who participated.

I hope to see the continued interest in all our upcoming events. It is so nice that so many are attending, and to know that we all can give support to our fellow Newfoundland owners. Please join us for Education Day on December 2nd. All specifics are listed on the web site.

Newfoundly, Cissy

Newfie Holiday Cut Out Cookies/Treats

Here are some easy-to-make treats, sure to delight your Newfie buddies. Made with cheese (a favorite flavor among canines) and garlic, they'll quickly become your Newfs favorite, paws down.

To make a batch, combine these ingredients:

1 1/4 cups of grated Cheddar cheese
1/4 pound of softened corn oil margarine
1 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour
1 crushed garlic clove

Mix well. Add enough milk to form the dough into a ball, then cover the ball with plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes. On a floured board, roll out the dough to a 1/2-inch thickness. Cut out bone shapes and bake on an ungreased baking sheet at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until slightly brown and firm. Makes 2 to 3 dozen, depending on size.

Hello Newf Friends,

Where did the summer go? I cannot believe how quickly the time seemed to pass. It is BACK TO SCHOOL TIME, which brings me to think about the classroom I USUALLY prepare now, and the excitement of meeting my NEWEST batch of little ones. Well this is the first year in 34 that I am switching gears, and there was no classroom and no sounds of little ones. I really had a VOID to fill. Along came a chance to participate in a water demonstration. Now this was just up my alley…. Dogs and kids, doesn’t get much better than that for me! On Wednesday August 15th Parent/Family night was held at the YMCA facility in Shioctin, Wisconsin. This is the new water practice site obtained for the use of NCNC members. This Family night offered a GREAT opportunity to enlighten, and entertain a large enthusiastic group of children and adults. I was able to join Gigi, Wisher, Jelly, Blackie, Baby Pink and Baby Green accompanied by their parents, Dr. Steve and Kathy Van Wie, Roger and Jan Danielsen, and Melissa Torres, in doing a great SHOW and TELL or if you prefer Drag and Brag for all to enjoy! Not only were the dogs showcasing their talents but they were true ambassadors of our breed exhibiting that “Gentle Giant” demeanor. As a remembrance of the evening, we provided an informational packet, Newfoundland dog coloring pages for the children, and paw print tattoos for EVERYONE!! It never ceases to amaze me how overwhelmed with pride I am in situations like this. Watching the joy and sheer delight on the faces of young and old alike was just a real treat for me. This is just one example of extending ourselves, and bringing an element of education to the general public. I encourage our members to take advantage of any situation possible to promote and enhance responsible pet ownership, increase knowledge about our breed, showcasing the many interesting facets of training, making therapy visits, and participating in school reading programs to name just a few. These opportunities become a WIN WIN situation for all involved. I would like to invite any of you who have participated in these types of outreach programs to share with us your experiences. I for one would love to read how our members are making a difference. On another note before our summer comes to a close, I hope many of you will plan on attending the NCNC Water Test at Lake Andrea, Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin on September 16th. I hear that we have quite a good entry again this year. I wish all our entrants GOOD LUCK in their quest for the WD or WRD titles. Switching gears and thinking ahead to the Fall season, don’t forget our Draft Test taking place at Rock Cut State Park, in Rockford, Illinois on October 16th. It is a beautiful spot to enjoy the changing seasonal environment, spend time with your Newfoundland’s, and watch or participate in yet another aspect of training. Mark your calendars to come on out. I am hoping to see many of you at these events, if not as entrants, then as supportive CHEERLEADERS!!!

Hi Newf Friends,

Well may I say that NCNC certainly knows how to throw a party/picnic! What would a party be without party favors and treat bags? From the pictures I took it certainly looked as if everyone had a PAWSITIVELY great time. There are many things and people to be thankful for: Mary T. and her committee for organizing the event, Darlene R. and her helpers for their creative, fun loving games, Roger D. for delivering supplies and helping with the set up, to all the members who came out to join in the sharing of good times with friends, for members who supplied brown bag items to be enjoyed, Tara M. for spear heading a NEW cookbook idea that we hope everyone will take ownership in and submit recipes for and her tireless efforts for Newf Novelties, for a great weather day, I can't imagine asking for anything more. I really appreciated the extension of friendship that all current members put forth to our guests who were joining us for the day's activities. It is that type of fellowship that exemplifies true ambassadors for this breed that we all love so dearly. Hopefully those guests will return with applications and desires for membership.

Even though I have had Newfoundlands for some time now, this Presidency position is venturing into new territory for me. I am a life long learner and this new endeavor is not familiar yet. It certainly will be a learning experience, one that I take to heart and will give my best. I have high hopes that with all our diverse backgrounds, we can learn from, and help each other achieve many positive things for our club, and our dogs. What a wealth of knowledge we all have access to from our members in the NCNC. I would like to encourage all members new/established, to ask questions, to have discussions, as this will open up dialogue and create avenues for learning and improvement. When I first started out with my dogs, I always hesitated to ask questions for fear of looking inadequate. I am hoping that no one will feel that way, and that the board, or established members will help facilitate any mentoring that is requested or needed. Heightening awareness, broadening education about our breed is a goal we all should have passion about. We are linked by our common love of our dogs, like the song lyrics say…. We are family…. I got all my NEWFIES WITH ME! Ok so I took creative liberty with the last part! Gee, I guess I am also showing my age! Wishing you all a safe and healthy summer with your furkids, and looking forward to seeing you at our next get together. Water Test, September 16, 2007.

Congratulations to all North Central Newfoundland club members who traveled to Boulder, Colorado to participate or be a spectator during the National. Many of our club members did well, it was a long trip 17-20+ hours of driving. Just making the cut at the National is a great experience and there are those that won their classes and placed with a ribbon. (Read who they are in the Show & Tell section.) Club members also did well in Obedience and Rally. If this was your first National, I hope you enjoyed it! If you handled your own dog, congratulations no matter the outcome. It takes a lot of intestinal fortitude for an owner-handler to perform in this venue. That is why so many of us decide that while we may train our dogs in conformation, at the big shows a professional handler can be an excellent choice as well.

Spring is a beautiful time to start an exercise program with your Newf, if you haven't already. Early morning or late evening is good time to walk your boy or girl or your whole pack. If you and your Newfie aren't into shape start with a short walk and gradually go farther. Build up their stamina as well as yours. An adult Newfoundland should be able to walk a mile to two miles or more daily fairly easily. At least a mile in the morning and at night. If you can't go that far, buy an XL backpack and put a couple water bottles in it. Carrying the additional weight will also build their muscles and make up for the lack of distance. Our first Newf walked two miles a day and at least four to six miles on Saturday and Sunday. When it gets too warm, try them on your treadmill. It isn't just a clothes hanger, all three of our Newfs wait for their turn to get on to tread. While most of our Newfs would prefer to sleep eight hours or more a day, they do need exercise and stimulation. Newfoundlands are Working dogs and they excel at it. Giving them a chore and keeping them exercised will reap rewards in a more contented and calm dog. They do need to perform work for us, even if that's found in the companionship of a walk together.

By starting an exercise regimen in spring, if not all year round will be beneficial when it is time to get your Newf in the water. Many Newfs are in decent shape, but not good or great shape. Once they are in the water, if you haven't been exercising your Newfoundland regularly, you will notice their fatigue. You will be wasting valuable water work time just getting your friend in shape.
Finding a place to do water work is also a difficult task - either humans can swim and dogs can't or dogs can and humans can't! Some of us travel many miles with our Newf to practice water training only to arrive and find there isn't much practice time or there are many other types of dogs at the location. Others spend a great deal of money and travel time to find a suitable water spot. For those members who live in the northern suburbs of Chicago try the Winnetka or Evanston Dog Beaches. It is suitable to use for the Junior Water dog exercises. If you go during the week at the right time you will have the beach to yourself. A season pass for a non-resident in Winnetka will cost you around $200 which includes a parking permit.

This will be my last column as President. I have enjoyed serving you and the Club. Thank you for the opportunity you have given me and the trust you placed in me over the past two years. I know you will support the new board members and President when they take office in June. As always volunteers and suggestions are welcome. Please feel free to contact any board member at any time if you have ideas. It takes many people to host some of our events. Those club members who volunteer their time work hard to put on an enjoyable event. Everyone's efforts are appreciated.

Until next time, Rick

Congratulations to all the winners, obedience qualifiers, and participants at North Central Newfoundland Club's Regional Specialty held in Franklin, WI. The two day event had a very large entry. Showing your Newfoundland should be enjoyable whether the result at the end of the day is what you expected or not. If you handled your own dog in the show ring, kudos to you. Being an owner in the ring or out of it watching your Newf can be nerve wrecking as well as exhilarating. The final reward of being part of the Regional makes the time and effort well worth it, win or lose.

Thank you to all the volunteers who worked on the Regional Specialty! Many club members don't realize the effort and hours needed to put on a specialty show, especially since we expanded to a two day event this year. It starts with Show Chair, Melissa Torres, assembling the show team and extends down to club members who help with the clean up when the show is completed. While it is great to have a large number of exhibitors, without the volunteers we would not be able to have such a flourishing show every year. Please be sure to thank everyone who volunteered to make this show a success when you see them. If you have comments on the Regional overall, please take the time to write Melissa or your board members. We would like to hear your opinions.

NCNC's next big event is Newfiepalooza, May 19th. The proceeds from this event benefits Newfoundland Rescue. While Newfiepalooza is an NCNC event, it is really the Rhonda and Karen show. Rhonda Brunning and Karen Clancy do a fabulous job organizing this affair. To view some of the wonderful items for silent auction or raffle please check our website. There will also be a professional photographer and CGC and TDI testing. Last year this event generated over $3,000 for North Central Newfoundland Rescue. With your participation this year, we hope the donation will be even larger. Please plan to attend this happening. The sad truth is that our Newfs grow from adorable puppies to oversized dogs seemingly overnight and not everyone who has a Newf is able to take care of them especially as they age or have special needs. Sometimes it is a matter of not understanding the breed or having the time to train them, tragically other times personal events happen that break up a Newfy home. Rescue is an important club function and any way that you can contribute is appreciated.

The Annual Picnic is June 24th. This is one of our primary club events with a membership meeting where we vote on our club officers and directors. You have to be present at this meeting to vote for the candidates. As well, we will honor our titlists from 2006. It is a fun day for the entire family. This is a good time to learn more about the people who serve you on the Board. What have we done as a Board to provide a service to you that you appreciate or enjoy? How could we serve you and your Newfoundalnd(s) better? What benefits do you receive by being a club member? Are the activities of interest to you? Many of us have been on the board for more than a couple of terms, do you feel we have served your interests? Have we been accessible to you and listened to your requests? The by-laws review is still underway and term limits for the Board is certainly an open item. Maybe you should think about seeking a board position next year. Change is good for us all.

NCNC is a one of the wealthier clubs because we have over $25,000 in available funds. Many clubs only have total funds which are similar to our checking account balance. NCNC also has a large membership of Newfoundland owners that love and live with your dogs as family members and pets. Of course, we need to maintain prudent reserves but this money belongs to the club and should be used for all members. Do you feel you receive benefit from the water test, draft test, or regional specialty, or perhaps you would like more activities that are focused on your interests? The board as a voting body sets policy. I try to guide us in the direction the club should go as you, the members, have indicated. As club president I only oversee what the board wishes to do, I chair the meetings and my vote only counts as one. As I always say, this is your club. If you wish for change, get involved and make yourself heard.

Until next time, Rick

President's Column - Rick Hartke

Greetings and Happy 2007! The holidays are such a busy time of year, I hope yours were safe and enjoyable. Hopefully like us, you had some time to relax, and were able to spend time with friends and family.

Our NCNC activities kick off in a slightly different direction than the past couple of years. This year instead of hosting a conformation clinic, our first event will be a grooming seminar. It will be conducted by Penny Shubert who is a master groomer and has groomed Best in Show (BIS) dogs at Westminster Kennel Club along with BIS at our Newfoundland National and Regional Specialties including NCNCs. This one-time event is scheduled for January 21st at Foster’s Training Center in Antioch, Illinois from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. While the seminar is geared to give participants hands-on experience in show grooming, it can also be beneficial to all of us who own and love our Newfs as part of our family. While the Newfoundland standard allows grooming for neatness in the show ring, all of our Newfs feel better and look better if they are trimmed up. The plus for pet owners or retired show dogs is that you don't need to keep their long feathers, hocks and "pants" in show condition. So, while we endure this rainy weather and season of mud, (along with never ending laundry of dirty wet towels!), learn how to trim up your furry friend's feet, coat, ears and more. That way they'll bring in less extra pieces of the great outdoors, will also dry faster and be subject to less mats. There are still spaces available if you wish to participate as an observer. If you're interested, please contact Claire Hernandez who is event chair for the seminar.

NCNC's Regional Specialty is now a two day event, March 2nd and 3rd at the Sports Complex in Franklin, WI. Since this is a two day show many volunteers are required. Show Chair Melissa Torres has been planning all year and in fact, I'm sure she started as soon as the 2006 Regional was over! It takes a lot of planning, effort, elbow grease and goodwill to host any regional and we just doubled that for this year's event. If you wish to donate your time, please contact Melissa or Denita Jackman who is the Obedience Chair. Remember there are many jobs that do not require any special talent (that makes me qualified!) such as clean-up, monitoring the silent auctions, helping to give out ring favors and prizes and on and on. You can help and we need you for this to continue in the grand tradition of hospitality, showmanship and fun that the NCNC Regional is known for. If your New Year resolution was to attend more NCNC functions and get to know other members, this is a great opportunity for you to keep that resolution and also see the largest group of Newfoundlands outside of the National Speciality!

A general membership meeting will be held January 28th at the Lake County Fairgrounds. he meeting will begin shortly after the Newfoundlands are finished in the show ring at the Grayslake show. The announcement will be forthcoming in the mail. Our goal at this meeting is to try to fill the balance of volunteers needed to have a successful Regional. Also, please take time to review the trophies which are still available for sponsorship. Sponsoring a trophy means that you fund the small memento given to winners and other placements at the Regional. It's a small thing to do and the person winning it will treasure their memory of a special day and the people who made it that way. The trophies that are still open for sponsorship can be found on our website at www.northcentralnewf.org.

If you haven't started already, now is the time to get your Newfoundland ready for the Regional. For those of you who plan on showing in conformation you should be working on your dog's coat (you'll get some great pointers if you attend the grooming seminar), practicing stacking, stepping up and movement. Don't forget physical conditioning either, a show dog should be in top shape. Walking and jogging are surefire ways to improve endurance and in return, you get time with your special friend. The Regional isn't only for conformation dogs, regular and rally obedience is also offered. So work on your healing patterns, down stays, stand for exam and figure eights. Enter and try to get a leg toward a Companion Dog (CD) title. If you're not sure how to get started and enter, ask an NCNC Board Member for information or a seasoned obedience person. We would be glad to answer any questions. Your board and other club members are resources for all of us to draw upon when needed.

We are concluding important work on the revision of the by-laws and will want to present them to the membership for approval this year. The by-laws are a necessary blueprint for how our organization is managed and run. Some of the items/sections have not been revised for many years and we hope to update them to make appropriate use of technology and other changes in organization structure. Currently we need a 20% of the voting membership to have a voting quorum for any official club business. Vice President Mary Trauernicht makes an excellent point in her article regarding renewal of your dues. We want to keep all of our members active in NCNC but if you are currently a voting member and haven't been able to attend any of the membership meetings in the past year, please consider changing your status to associate rather than voting. Conversely, if you are attending most club functions and membership meetings and you are an associate member who lives within our primary boundaries, please take advantage of the opportunity to become a voting member.

Until next time, Rick

Ginger Bones
Newfs love the taste and aroma of their very own ginger cookies - better yet, use a "Squirrel" cookie cutter for extra delight. Makes 5-6 dozen cookies

Ingredients:
4 cups all purpose flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup molasses
1 cup water
½ cup vegetable oil
4 tablespoons ground ginger
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves

Directions:
Place all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly to combine.
Roll out the dough on floured surface to about ¼ inch thick. Using cookie cutter, cut into desired shapes until the entire dough has been used.
Place cookies on ungreased foil-lined baking sheets and bake in preheated 325 degree oven for 30-35 minutes.
