CHECK
OUT THE PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS!!!!!!
We've received a VERY generous
donation from PatchWorkPattie's Quilts to make a photo quilt that
will be
auctioned off (live auction) at this year's Newfiepalooza - Benefit
for Rescue.
And this year - the winning 12 pictures
will be made into a calendar for 2010!!!
Because Pattie
Mitchell - of PatchWorkPattie Quilts -
needs a number of personalized photos to make the quilt - we've decided
to have a photo contest to get the best pictures from our club members.
Here are
two examples of quilts she has made in the past. These are exquisite
handmade pieces of art. The winner of this item is sure to have an
amazing keepsake.
Now on to
the contest:
- There will
be 12 winning photos chosen from all submitted. The winners will
be chosen by a panel of unbiased 'experts' ...
- The
judges will not know who submitted each photo - they will
be given a number, which the judges will use to identify.
- The
winning photos will have their photos showcased at Newfiepalooza
and, obviously, on the quilt. The winners will also receive
twelve (12) Showcase Raffle Item Tickets (a $20 Value) and forty
(40) brown bag raffle tickets (a $20 value) to use as they wish.
- There
is a LIMIT of 5 entries per member. There is no limit
to the number of winning pictures per entrant. We
hope to get
a wide
range
of activities for our judges to choose from. We would
like to showcase the many activities
and qualities of our wonderful breed.
- All
photos must be submitted and received by March 3rd, 2009
at Noon CST.
- Winners
will be announced via this website no later than March
6th, 2009
HOW PICTURES
MUST BE SUBMITTED:
Any image you plan to use must
be saved at approximately 300-dpi at 100% output size for
the
very best printing
results.
It’s helpful to know that shrinking an image on a product
will increase its resolution. For example, an image captured
at 600 x 900 pixels has 150-dpi at 4” x 6”. However,
it can be printed at 300-dpi by reducing its dimensions on
the product to 2” x 3”.
Images
from a Digital Camera:
If you wish
to use images from a digital camera, before you snap pictures
make sure the camera is set at a high
enough
resolution to result in 300 DPI at the intended photo
print size. Most cameras have various settings for resolutions.
The
highest resolution for your camera depends on how many
megapixels it has.
You cannot
increase the resolution of a photo after it is taken, except
by reducing its printed dimensions
(after you upload
the image). Be careful when cropping a photo after
it is taken. Cropping will reduce the number of pixels
in
the final image.
Images
from a Scanner:
Like a digital
camera, a scanner must be preset to the proper resolution before
image
capture. Many
scanners default to
150-dpi (or spi). Set your scanner’s resolution so
that it results in 300-dpi at the image’s
final print size. If your resulting scanned image
is smaller than the
recommended size
or has less
dpi than you need, you should either rescan your
original at a higher resolution, or use the image
for a smaller
printed area. |
The
Rules for the Contest:
- No
professionally shot photographs (i.e., money paid for the
pictures to be taken).
- The
photos must have been taken by the person submitting the
photo or a member of the immediate family of the person
submitting the photo.
- The
person submitting the photo must be a current member of the
North Central Newfoundland Club.
- The
person submitting the photo gives permission to the club
to use the photo for the quilt and to put the pictures
on the NCNC website and/or newsletter and to display them
at Newfiepalooza 2009.

Our Panel
of Judges
- Sandra Nicholson
is a Newfoundland Dog enthusiast from Ontario, Canada.

Dog rescue www.newf-friends.ca and
is active in both Newf rescue and all breed rescue. Owner/operator
of a Gallery and Gift shop, she is also
a freelance photographer who spends her free time on the lake or
trails with a camera around her neck and a pack of giant dogs at
her side. Her passion for Newfoundland Dogs can be seen through
her lens, as they are often the subject of her photographs. www.throughmylens.ca.
- Cassandra Salabarria was
born in San Joaquin Valley, California where she spent eight years
in the veterinary
field taking in numerous
rescues, rehabilitating, and finding their true forever homes.
In 1996 she took in her first Newf mix who turned into her
first foster failure. Since then, her heart has been partial
to the breed,
especially those in need.
She currently resides in Southern Arizona with her family
as a freelance photographer specializing in black and whites.
This is not a contest
about being the "best" photographer - rather
they will be choosing the pictures that best emote the feelings of
the Newfoundland Dog and the bond they share with those that are
fortunate enough to own them.
